As global markets find their footing and political tempers flare in the capital, here is a look at the stories shaping the headlines today.

The diplomatic calendar is looking heavy for the Prime Minister’s Office. Reports confirm that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has formally invited PM Modi to attend the funeral and burial ceremonies for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The events, scheduled from July 4 to July 9, are set to span Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad, marking a significant moment in India-Iran relations following the February strikes.

Back home, the political temperature remains high. The BJP has launched a scathing attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, with IT cell chief Amit Malviya accusing the Opposition leader of amplifying claims that mirror Pakistani propaganda during the ongoing 'Operation Sindoor' discourse. The controversy stems from Gandhi’s public questioning of the government regarding alleged Rafale losses; the BJP maintains that instead of echoing external narratives, the Congress should be seeking verifiable evidence from Islamabad.

Market Recovery and Local Crises

While the political drama unfolds, the bourses provided a rare moment of relief for investors. Benchmark indices staged a sharp turnaround on Wednesday, with the Sensex climbing 791 points to close at 76,991, while the Nifty50 added 198 points to finish at 24,022. Traders seem buoyed by a mix of positive global cues, particularly from South Korea, alongside cooling crude oil prices and growing optimism regarding a potential India-US trade deal.

Tragedy struck in West Bengal, however, where a warehouse collapse in Kolkata’s Taratala area has left at least three people dead. Rescue teams worked through the day to pull 21 survivors from the debris of the under-construction site. Nine of those rescued are currently receiving medical attention at SSKM Hospital, as local authorities continue to clear the site and investigate the structural failure.

Why it matters

The convergence of these events highlights a challenging week for the government. The invitation to Iran places PM Modi at the center of a delicate geopolitical balancing act in a volatile Middle East. Simultaneously, the escalation in rhetoric over Rafale suggests that the BJP is keen to frame the national security debate around the narrative of foreign influence, effectively countering Opposition scrutiny by questioning the source of their information. Markets may be cheering the trade deal prospects, but domestic infrastructure safety and political stability remain the bedrock issues that will define the coming news cycle.

On a lighter note, sports fans found a reason to cheer as the cricketing world took notice of the next generation. Young talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, currently training with India’s squad for the Ireland series, shared a proud moment on social media after his 10-year-old brother, Ashirvad, hammered a spectacular 168-run century off just 119 balls, further cementing the family's reputation in local cricketing circles.
