High passenger demand has pushed the Railways to upgrade the Narsapur-Tiruvannamalai weekly service, marking a major connectivity win for coastal Andhra.
The scene at Bhimavaram Town railway station was one of relief and celebration this week, as Union Minister Srinivasa Varma officially flagged off the conversion of the Narsapur-Arunachalam (Tiruvannamalai) Express from a special service to a permanent weekly train. For thousands of pilgrims and daily commuters, this shift brings an end to the uncertainty of seasonal scheduling, ensuring a reliable link between the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and the spiritual hub of Tiruvannamalai.
The move comes after the route recorded an impressive 110% occupancy rate. According to officials, the service, which was first introduced as a special train on July 9 last year, consistently outperformed expectations. Minister Varma noted that the decision to regularize the train was a direct response to this overwhelming demand, reflecting the necessity of better transit options for those travelling from West Godavari, Krishna, and Guntur districts.
The Connectivity Blueprint
The route is designed to be a vital artery for the region, stopping at 12 key stations. Passengers can board at Palakollu, Bhimavaram, Akividu, Kaikaluru, Gudivada, Vijayawada, Tenali, Ongole, and Nellore within Andhra Pradesh, before moving through Renigunta and into Tamil Nadu via Katpadi to reach the destination of Arunachalam. By streamlining this transit, the Railways has successfully addressed a long-standing logistical gap for both local travellers and devotees.
Why it Matters
This development is part of a broader push to recalibrate rail infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh. For the average commuter, the regularization of the Narsapur-Arunachalam service isn't just about one train; it signals a shift in how the railway ministry is prioritizing high-demand corridors. By moving away from temporary "special" tags, the department is signalling a commitment to long-term infrastructure stability in the state, acknowledging that these regions are no longer just seasonal hubs but year-round transit points.
Looking ahead, the administration has set its sights on further expansion. Minister Varma confirmed that a new Narsapur-Bengaluru weekly express is slated for a July 10 launch. Beyond this, there is active planning for a daytime service between Narsapur and Visakhapatnam, a potential halt for the Vande Bharat Express at Tadepalligudem, and a long-awaited rail connection between Narsapur and Varanasi. These infrastructure updates suggest a concerted effort to integrate the coastal belt more deeply into the national rail network, balancing commercial needs with the high volume of religious tourism.
