From Set to Street: Satendra Soni Alleges Assault by Director in Payment Standoff

For most actors, the end of a shooting schedule is a wrap-up marked by camaraderie and the promise of a paycheque. For Satendra Soni, a familiar face from Laapataa Ladies and Doctor G, the experience in Madhya Pradesh took a harrowing turn. What began as a standard professional dispute over unpaid remuneration has spiralled into allegations of public assault and death threats, leaving the actor shaken and demanding accountability from the film’s production team.

Soni, whose career includes appearances in Bawaal and Raat Akeli Hai, took to Instagram to detail the confrontation. According to the actor, he had been working on a project directed by Pushpendra Singh for eight days. While a signing amount of Rs 50,000 had been provided, the remainder of his fee remained pending. When Soni approached the director to discuss the outstanding dues, the professional dynamic allegedly fractured instantly.

The actor’s account is chilling: he claims he was abruptly told to pack his bags and issued a direct threat to vacate his hotel immediately. In a video posted to his social media, a distressed Soni alleged that the filmmaker told him, “I better not see you in the hotel,” followed by explicit threats to his life. The situation reportedly moved from verbal intimidation to physical violence on the streets, with Soni alleging that both Pushpendra Singh and his wife, Pragati Chauhan, chased him and two colleagues in a car before cornering them in public.

A Dangerous Precedent

The allegations suggest that the confrontation turned physical on a public road, where Soni claims the couple assaulted him and a companion who attempted to intervene. Following the incident, Soni and his associates managed to leave the location, eventually finding safety at a railway station. He has since publicly credited the Madhya Pradesh Police for their intervention, which allowed the team to return to Mumbai without further escalation.

This incident pulls back the curtain on the often-precarious nature of freelance work in the film industry. While high-profile stars often operate under ironclad contracts, supporting actors and crew members frequently navigate a grey area where verbal agreements and production-side leverage leave them vulnerable.
