Dharmasthala Case: Chinnaiah Approaches SIT Amid Escalating Threats from YouTubers

Chinnaiah, a central figure in the Dharmasthala burial case, has formally filed a complaint with the SIT, alleging intense intimidation following his move to seek judicial oversight.

The atmosphere surrounding the long-standing Dharmasthala case has intensified once again. Chinnaiah, who previously grabbed headlines by arriving at the site with a 'buruda' (hollow gourd) to protest, appeared at the Belthangadi SIT office this weekend. Accompanied by his wife, he submitted a formal complaint against Abhishek and Girish Mattannavar, both associated with the 'United Media' YouTube channel, alleging that they are orchestrating a campaign of harassment and threats against him and his family.

A Legal Battle and Subsequent Retaliation

The friction follows Chinnaiah’s decision to escalate his search for justice to the highest levels. Recently, he filed a Writ Petition (W.P. No. 17331/2026) in the Karnataka High Court, specifically requesting that the investigative report concerning the alleged burial case in Dharmasthala be made public. The High Court, acknowledging the gravity of the request, has since issued notices to the state government and the Special Investigation Team (SIT), directing the latter to provide a comprehensive status report on the progress of the investigation.

According to the complaint filed at the Belthangadi SIT office, the judicial intervention appears to have triggered a backlash. Chinnaiah alleges that since the High Court mandate, he has been subjected to persistent pressure and threatening phone calls. He claims that the individuals behind 'United Media' are actively attempting to coerce him into withdrawing his pursuit of the case.

Why it Matters: The Bigger Picture

This incident highlights the precarious nature of whistleblowing and public interest litigation in high-profile local investigations. When legal avenues are pursued, the interplay between online media influence and ground-level investigation often becomes volatile. By targeting the SIT, the premier investigative body, Chinnaiah is signaling that the burden of safety now rests with the state, especially since his legal petition forced the authorities to account for their progress. This case serves as a test of how effectively the system can shield a petitioner from extra-legal pressure while maintaining the sanctity of an ongoing probe.

The SIT is now faced with a dual challenge: completing the original investigation into the burial allegations and addressing the safety concerns of a key participant. As the court-mandated deadline for the investigative report approaches, the pressure on the state to ensure the process remains transparent and free from outside intimidation continues to mount.
