Delhi University Professor Found Murdered in Her East Delhi Apartment
DU assistant professor murdered at home in east Delhi

A 42-year-old academic, who resided alone in Vasundhara Enclave, was discovered dead by her sister after concerns over unanswered phone calls.
The academic community and local residents in East Delhi are in shock following the discovery of the body of a Delhi University assistant professor on Thursday afternoon. Debosmita Paul, who taught at Shivaji College, was found dead inside her flat at Satyam Apartment in Vasundhara Enclave. The New Ashok Nagar police station received a distress call at approximately 2:35 pm from the victim’s 49-year-old sister, who had been unable to reach her throughout the day.
Discovery of the Scene
The victim’s sister, Devarati Paul, grew increasingly anxious when her repeated attempts to contact the professor went unanswered. Upon arriving at the residence, she discovered the front door locked from the outside. With the help of locals and members of the Resident Welfare Association (RWA), the lock was broken. Once inside, the sister made the tragic discovery of the professor’s body. Law enforcement officials noted that there were no immediate signs of forced entry, leading investigators to suspect that the perpetrator may have been someone known to the victim.
Forensic Findings and Investigation
Preliminary findings at the scene revealed significant trauma. Reports indicate the victim sustained a severe head injury and had defensive wounds on her hands, along with lacerations on her wrists and bruising on her body, suggesting a violent struggle took place. While police have registered a case of murder under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the motive remains unclear. Investigators stated that while robbery has not been completely ruled out, it does not appear to be the primary cause, as the victim’s jewellery remained untouched and no household items were reported missing.
Background and Ongoing Probe
Dr. Paul was a respected scholar whose academic expertise spanned partition studies, Indian literature, and postcolonial studies. She completed her PhD and MPhil at Jamia Millia Islamia before joining the permanent faculty at Shivaji College in 2023. Beyond her professional achievements, police are currently examining her personal life as part of the investigation. Sources confirmed that she had been living alone and was in the midst of legal separation proceedings involving her Bengaluru-based husband.
Multiple police teams have been deployed to analyze forensic evidence and call detail records. The body has been moved to a local hospital for a post-mortem examination, which officials expect will provide definitive answers regarding the exact cause of death as the investigation continues.
