Delhi Schools Face Stringent Safety Audit as LG Cracks Down on POCSO Non-Compliance

Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has ordered an immediate, comprehensive review of safety protocols across all city schools, signaling a zero-tolerance policy for lapses in child protection.

The corridors of power in नई दिल्ली were buzzing on Wednesday following a high-level directive from the Lieutenant Governor’s office. In a significant move to overhaul student safety, LG Taranjit Singh Sandhu has mandated a comprehensive security audit of every school in the capital. The directive follows a clear message from the administration: when it comes to the safety and dignity of children within school premises, there is no room for administrative negligence.

Tightening the Net on POCSO Compliance

The core of this directive focuses on the strict enforcement of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. During a high-level meeting at Raj Niwas, which included the Delhi Police Commissioner, the Secretary of the Women and Child Development Department, and the Director of Education, officials were tasked with evaluating the ground reality of safety guidelines.

The audit will not just be a paper exercise. Schools will be scrutinized on their internal security infrastructure, the effectiveness of their grievance redressal mechanisms, and the frequency of student awareness programs. The administration has made it clear that any institution found lacking in its duty to protect students will face strict disciplinary action.

Heightened Police Vigilance

Beyond the classroom walls, the LG has also directed the Delhi Police to bolster their presence around school zones. The order specifically mandates increased patrolling during dispersal hours—the period when students are most vulnerable—and in areas with high footfall near school gates. This integration of institutional compliance and visible policing marks a shift toward a more proactive security posture in the city.

Why It Matters: A Shift in Accountability

For years, the discourse on school safety in delhi has often been reactive, triggered by isolated incidents of negligence. By mandating a city-wide audit, the administration is attempting to move the needle from reactive crisis management to systematic prevention. The real challenge, however, will lie in the implementation—ensuring that the audit is not a one-time formality but a sustained monitoring mechanism.

The implication is clear: the state is signalling to private and public school managements alike that the 'POCSO compliance' certificate is no longer a pro-forma requirement but a baseline benchmark for operating in the capital. For parents, this push for accountability is a long-overdue step; for school administrators, it serves as a stern warning that the oversight on child safety is set to become significantly more rigorous.
