As advance bookings cross Rs 4 crore, the much-anticipated sequel faces the heat of an 'A' certification and the weight of massive expectations.

The buzz around Homi Adajania’s Cocktail 2 is reaching a fever pitch as the June 19 release date approaches. A decade after the Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Diana Penty starrer redefined urban rom-coms in India, this original successor is testing whether a new generation of star power can replicate that magic. With Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, and Rashmika Mandanna leading the cast, the film is already making waves, raking in Rs 4.21 crore through advance bookings alone.

The Numbers Game

Trade experts are keeping a close watch on the opening day projections, which hover between Rs 9 crore and Rs 12 crore. This puts it in direct contention with the primary benchmark: the 2012 Cocktail. That film opened at Rs 10.95 crore, eventually netting Rs 71.24 crore domestically and reaching Rs 121.78 crore worldwide.

To put the current momentum in perspective, the lead actors’ recent individual outings provide a telling source of comparison. Kriti Sanon’s Tere Ishq Mein saw advance bookings of Rs 5.65 crore, Rashmika’s Thamba hit Rs 6.37 crore, and Shahid’s O’Romeo brought in Rs 3.05 crore. The success of this sequel will depend on whether these individual fan bases coalesce into a single, cohesive draw.

The CBFC Hurdle and Social Chatter

A significant roadblock—or perhaps a badge of authenticity—is the CBFC decision to grant the film an 'A' (Adults Only) certificate. This limits the audience to those 18 and older, potentially impacting the initial footfall. Furthermore, the film has had to contend with rampant social media speculation regarding its plot.

Addressing rumors that the film centers on a lesbian relationship, Kriti Sanon clarified the narrative during a recent press interaction. "It’s not a lesbian story. I know our chemistry is great, but we are all playing straight characters. It’s an emotional threesome, not a physical one," she stated, putting the gossip to rest before the premiere.

Why it matters

The industry is viewing Cocktail 2 as a litmus test for the "urban emotional drama" genre. Modern audiences have become increasingly selective, and the 'A' certificate signals that the makers are leaning into a more mature, perhaps grittier, exploration of relationships than the original film offered. If the film performs well over the weekend, it could signal a shift in how studios greenlight sequels—moving away from family-friendly tropes toward content that explicitly targets a mature, multiplex-going demographic. Whether it breaks the opening-day record of its predecessor will ultimately depend on the word-of-mouth generated after the first few shows on Wednesday.
