Cocktail 2 Defies Skepticism: Why This Box Office Run Is Turning Heads

Despite a lukewarm critical reception, the Shahid-Kriti-Rashmika starrer is pulling audiences in droves, crossing the ₹50 crore mark globally in just two days.

It is rare to see a film shrug off mediocre reviews with such nonchalance. Fourteen years after Homi Adajania’s original Cocktail became a cult classic of sorts, anchored by the chemistry between Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Diana Penty, the pressure on its sequel was immense. Yet, Cocktail 2 seems to have found its own rhythm. While the critics were far from impressed with the narrative, the audience’s verdict at the box office tells a completely different story.

The numbers are telling a tale of resilience. After a solid opening day, the film recorded a 20.4% jump in earnings on its second day. According to Sacnilk, while Friday brought in ₹13.50 crore, the momentum climbed to ₹16.25 crore on Saturday. By the end of its second day, the film’s domestic net collection stood at ₹29.75 crore, with its global gross hitting the ₹50.95 crore milestone. It is a classic case of star power—Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, and Rashmika Mandanna—outperforming the script’s limitations.

The Power of the Footfall

What’s striking is the organic growth in occupancy rates. Starting at a modest 13.23% in the morning shows on Saturday, the film saw an uptick as the day progressed, hitting 31.38% by the afternoon and peaking at 42.46% for the night screenings. This trend suggests that the film is spreading through word-of-mouth, or perhaps, simply filling the void for a glossy, big-ticket entertainer that audiences have been craving.

Even with a reduced show count—dropping slightly from 10,835 on opening day to 10,245 on Saturday—the revenue per screen increased, proving that the cocktail of star casting and brand nostalgia is doing the heavy lifting. If the current trajectory holds, the film is comfortably headed toward a ₹40–45 crore opening weekend in the domestic market alone.

The Bigger Picture

Why does this matter? The success of Cocktail 2 highlights a widening chasm between critical consensus and commercial viability. In an era where digital discourse can bury a project before it even hits the screens, this film serves as a reminder that the Indian audience’s appetite for star-led romantic dramas remains undiminished.

The primary takeaway here isn't about the quality of the cinema, but the endurance of the "event film" format. When a sequel carries the baggage of a beloved predecessor, it starts with an advantage, but sustaining that interest requires a specific kind of audience connection. Cocktail 2 is proving that as long as the chemistry clicks on screen, the audience is willing to overlook a shaky narrative. For the industry, this is a lesson in the continued potency of big-budget, star-driven original casting over the critical reception of the article or the review.
