Bihar Weather Update: Storm Alert for 6 Districts as Heatwave Lingers

As pre-monsoon activity intensifies, the state braces for squalls and lightning while some regions continue to grapple with oppressive heat.

The sky over Bihar is currently a study in contrasts. While residents in several northern districts are bracing for a sudden, violent shift in the weather, those in the south are still navigating the fallout of a relentless heatwave. The Patna Meteorological Centre has issued an urgent orange alert, warning that Sitamarhi, Supaul, East Champaran, West Champaran, Madhubani, and Sheohar are likely to face moderate thunderstorms and lightning strikes within the next three hours. In these areas, winds are expected to whip up at speeds of 50 to 60 km/h, making it a treacherous window for anyone caught outdoors.

For much of the state, this June brings a mix of relief and hazard. While rain is expected across most of Bihar today, five districts—Kaimur, Buxar, Bhojpur, Arwal, and Aurangabad—have been placed in the green zone, largely spared from the immediate storm activity. However, this lack of rain in the south highlights a persistent problem: the heat. Dehri remains the hottest pocket, with temperatures soaring past 42.6°C, while weather Patna reports continue to trend as the capital struggles with a maximum temperature of 41.2°C, significantly higher than seasonal norms.

The Bigger Picture: A Climate in Flux

Why does this matter? The current atmospheric instability is a classic signature of a volatile pre-monsoon transition. The clash between moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal and existing high-temperature pockets is creating these localized, high-intensity storm cells. For the common citizen, this pattern—alternating between scorching humidity and sudden, dangerous squalls—is becoming the new normal for early summer. It isn't just a daily inconvenience; it is a signal of how sensitive the regional climate has become, impacting everything from agricultural cycles to urban infrastructure.

Safety Guidelines for Residents

The meteorological department has been clear in its breaking advisory: if you are caught in the open during these storms, do not seek shelter under isolated, tall trees or near electric poles, as these are primary targets for lightning. Farmers have been urged to stay away from their fields until the samachar of the storm subsides.

The headlines across the Hindi press reflect the urgency of the situation, with many outlets emphasizing that while the updated reports bring a forecast of rain, the threat of 'vajrapat' (lightning strikes) remains a critical danger. Whether you are in a yellow alert zone like Nalanda or Gaya, or the more volatile northern orange zones, the standard operating procedure remains the same: stay indoors, keep away from conductive structures, and monitor local updates closely. With the monsoon expected to further influence the state in the coming days, the current unpredictability is likely to persist.
