Beyond the Rough Exterior: Buchi Babu Defends 'Peddi' Character Arc

As the Ram Charan starrer 'Peddi' dominates the box office, director Buchi Babu Sana addresses the audience's mixed response to Janhvi Kapoor’s characterization.

The blockbuster success of Peddi has been nothing short of a phenomenon, with the film crossing a massive ₹393 crore mark to become South India’s top grosser in 2026. Yet, even amidst the celebratory hum of a record-breaking run, director Buchi Babu Sana found himself addressing a specific point of contention: the portrayal of Achiyamma, the lead character played by Janhvi Kapoor. Critics and viewers alike have voiced concerns that the character’s "rough," tomboyish aesthetic lacked emotional clarity, with some even labelling her depiction as disrespectful.

At a success meet held this Sunday, Buchi Babu offered a candid defense of his creative choices. He argued that the perception of the character as purely "rough" misses the nuanced sensitivity she displays when faced with personal crises. According to the director, the confusion stems from a narrative gap. He acknowledged that certain scenes were left out, which led to the audience feeling disconnected from the protagonist's underlying vulnerabilities.

Reframing the Narrative

To bridge this gap, the team is taking a proactive approach. Starting this Wednesday, two additional scenes will be integrated into the film’s theatrical cut. Buchi Babu is confident that these additions will provide the missing emotional anchor, allowing the audience to better empathize with the character’s internal struggles. He emphasized that even a character who projects a "magarayudu" (tomboy/rough) exterior possesses inherently feminine sensibilities—a reality that becomes apparent during her most challenging moments.

The discourse surrounding the film has been intense, particularly regarding its dialogues and specific cinematic moments, such as the widely discussed "eyes that don't need kohl" sequence. While some viewers have drawn parallels between the protagonist and earlier iconic character archetypes, the director maintains that art is subjective. He believes that once the new footage is added, the ambiguity surrounding the character’s arc will dissipate, shifting the audience’s reception to a more positive register.

Why It Matters

This situation highlights a common friction point in modern Indian cinema: the challenge of balancing raw, unconventional character traits with traditional emotional resonance. When a director pushes for a "rougher" female lead, the audience—accustomed to specific archetypes—often reacts with skepticism if the character's motivation isn't immediately legible. By choosing to edit the film post-release, the Peddi team is essentially engaging in a "live" correction of the audience's viewing experience. It reflects a growing trend where filmmakers are increasingly sensitive to social media sentiment and are willing to iterate on their work to ensure narrative coherence, even after a project has already cemented its status as a massive commercial success.
