Bangladesh Rejigs Strategy: Taskin, Rana Return for Australia T20Is as Hridoy Gets Test Nod
Taskin and Rana return for T20Is against Australia
Bangladesh has bolstered its pace attack for the upcoming T20I series against Australia while testing new talent in the longer format ahead of the Zimbabwe tour.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has signalled a deliberate shift in strategy, recalling frontline pacers Taskin Ahmed and Nahid Rana for the three-match T20I series against Australia, which kicks off in Chattogram on June 17. The return of the duo, who were rested during the April series in New Zealand, comes at the cost of seam-bowling allrounder Mohammad Saifuddin and seamer Ripon Mondol. Selectors are clearly prioritising raw pace as they prepare for the challenge posed by the visitors.
The squad composition highlights a heavy rotation policy, particularly regarding the fast-bowling department. While Taskin and Rana are back in the fold for the shorter format, they have been rested for the upcoming one-off Test match in Harare, scheduled for June 28. Chief selector Habibul Bashar explained that this churn is essential for managing player workloads, ensuring the core fast bowlers remain fresh for the rigours of international cricket.
The Hridoy Factor
Perhaps the most intriguing development is the inclusion of Tawhid Hridoy in the Test squad for the Zimbabwe tour. While Hridoy has become a fixture in the white-ball setup since his 2023 debut—amassing 59 T20Is and 52 ODIs—his transition to the five-day format is a calculated gamble. Bashar noted that the team management is looking to inject aggression into the batting order, banking on Hridoy’s ability to score quickly, despite his limited first-class exposure of just 16 matches.
The team will also see the return of Khaled Ahmed to the Test fold, while medium-pacer Robiul Haque earns a call-up. Bashar pointed out that Robiul is being groomed as a potential fast-bowling allrounder, an asset Bangladesh has historically struggled to cultivate. With 107 first-class wickets and over 600 runs, the selectors are eager to see if he can translate his domestic consistency to the international arena.
Why it matters
This double selection signal reflects a BCB looking beyond immediate results. By drafting Hridoy into the Test squad and keeping faith in young prospects like Robiul, the board is clearly attempting to bridge the gap between their talented white-ball core and the traditional red-ball setup. For a team that often relies on the same few names, creating a reliable pipeline of multi-format players is not just a luxury—it is a necessity for long-term competitiveness.
The series against Australia serves as a high-stakes litmus test for the returning pacers, who have seen their club commitments curtailed—most notably with the BCB withdrawing NOCs for Mustafizur Rahman and Rana for the PSL—to ensure their availability for national duty. As Bangladesh navigates these personnel rotations, the primary goal remains stability. Whether these changes provide the requisite depth or disrupt the team’s rhythm will become clear as the Chattogram matches unfold next week.
