Arunachal CM Khandu Dismisses Beijing’s Territorial Claims as ‘Habitual’ Rhetoric
Arunachal CM Khandu brushes aside China's territorial claims, repeated renaming of places: ‘We don’t give a damn'

Chief Minister Pema Khandu has firmly rejected China's repeated attempts to assert sovereignty over the northeastern state, highlighting that local citizens remain entirely unfazed by the provocations.
Arunachal CM Khandu delivered a blunt assessment of Beijing’s ongoing attempts to lay claim to the Indian state, describing the frequent rhetoric as a mere "habit" that holds no weight for the people of the region. Speaking on the sidelines of a recent event in Shillong, the Chief Minister emphasized that such assertions are far from a new development and are met with total indifference by those living in the frontier state.
Addressing the Border Reality
During his address, Khandu provided a crucial geographical clarification, asserting that the state shares its border with Tibet rather than China. He underscored that Arunachal Pradesh remains highly secure, dismissing the persistent territorial claims as noise that his administration does not take seriously. The Chief Minister made it clear that the state is not intimidated by the repetitive nature of these declarations, noting that the government and the public have become accustomed to such posturing.
Infrastructure and the 'Viksit Bharat' Era
Shifting focus to the state of national readiness, the Chief Minister explicitly rejected comparisons between the border situation of 1962 and the current landscape. He noted that such analogies are fundamentally misleading in the context of 2026. According to Khandu, the nation has entered an era of "New India" and a "Developed India" (Viksit Bharat), characterized by a massive, centralized push toward robust infrastructure development.
Significant advancements have been recorded across India's northern borders, extending from Kashmir all the way to Arunachal Pradesh. Khandu credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the rapid modernization of these territories, which has rendered previously isolated and remote border regions highly accessible. This strategic upgrade in connectivity and logistics, he noted, has significantly bolstered the support systems for India's armed forces.
A Pattern of Provocation
Beijing has continued its practice of issuing standardized names for various geographical features within the state, a tactic that has been employed repeatedly since the 2017 Doklam standoff. Reports indicate that over 80 cities and landmarks in the region have been targeted in these renaming exercises. Despite these maneuvers, the Ministry of External Affairs has consistently maintained that such actions are vain and mischievous, asserting that they fail to alter the ground reality of the state’s status as an inalienable part of India.
