Aadhaar Card Update Deadline Extended: Here’s How You Can Save ₹75

The government has pushed the free online update window for your Aadhaar card to June 2027, giving citizens more time to keep their digital identities current.

If you have been procrastinating on updating your aadhaar card, the government has just handed you a massive three-year reprieve. What was widely perceived as a looming mid-June cutoff has been replaced by a much more generous timeline, allowing residents to rectify their details without reaching for their wallets.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has officially extended the deadline for free online document uploads to June 14, 2027. This extension is a strategic move to ensure that the country's massive database remains accurate, as outdated information often leads to unnecessary friction in accessing essential services.

What You Can Change Online

This free-of-cost facility is exclusively available through the official 'myAadhaar' portal. Users can update vital information such as their name, address, and mobile number. Crucially, this window is meant for refreshing your proof of identity and proof of address.

While the online route remains free, it is important to remember that this benevolence does not extend to physical centers. If you choose to visit an Aadhaar enrollment center to get your card updated, you will still be required to pay the standard service fee of ₹75.

Why It Matters: The Bigger Picture

From a policy perspective, this extension reflects a push toward data hygiene. In India’s digital-first economy, the aadhaar acts as the primary anchor for everything from banking transactions and school admissions to the direct benefit transfer of government subsidies.

When records are stagnant for a decade, the mismatch between the physical reality of a citizen and their digital record creates a bottleneck. By removing the financial barrier for another three years, the government is essentially incentivizing voluntary compliance over enforcement. It is a pragmatic shift—making the "cost" of being updated zero is the most effective way to ensure the national database remains a reliable primary source of truth for service delivery.

A Note for Residents

Before logging in, ensure you have your supporting documents scanned and ready. While the deadline is now years away, it is best to treat this as a "do it when you remember" task rather than waiting for 2027. Keeping your documentation in sync with your current address is the simplest way to avoid the last-minute panic that often accompanies mandatory document renewals.
