A New Era for the Armoured Corps: General Dhiraj Seth Set to Lead the Indian Army

As General Upendra Dwivedi concludes his tenure, a seasoned veteran of the Armoured Corps steps into the role of the 31st Chief of the Army Staff.

The Indian Army is set for a significant leadership transition this Tuesday as General Dhiraj Seth takes charge as the 31st Chief of the Army Staff. His appointment marks a rare and notable milestone: he is the first officer from the Armoured Corps to ascend to the top post since the retirement of General Shankar Roy Chowdhary in 1997. For a force that has increasingly focused on rapid mobility and modernization, the elevation of an Armoured Corps veteran signals a return to a specific pedigree of tactical leadership.

General Seth’s career is defined by a deep familiarity with India’s most sensitive borders. Before his elevation, he served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of both the Pune-based Southern Command and the Jaipur-based South Western Command. Commanding these two strategic formations—both of which are primary theaters for operations along the western frontier—is a distinction held by very few officers. His resume also includes leadership roles at the 21 Corps in Bhopal and the Delhi Area, the latter of which saw him managing high-stakes ceremonial responsibilities.

Commissioned into the 2nd Lancers (Gardner’s Horse) in 1986, General Seth is a product of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy. His professional growth was sharpened by international exposure, including the Command & Staff Course in Paris, alongside his training at the National Defence College. He enters the office of the Chief of the Army Staff bearing the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal—decorations that reflect a career built on operational excellence.

A Legacy of Service

Military service runs deep in the family. General Seth is the son of the late Lt General Krishna Mohan Seth, a decorated officer who served as Adjutant General and later held gubernatorial roles in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Tripura. The family legacy continues into the maritime domain as well; his younger brother, Rear Admiral Ravnish Seth, is currently serving in Karwar. In a unique professional parallel, both the incoming Army Chief and his father have commanded the prestigious Sudarshan Chakra Corps.

Why it matters: The Bigger Picture

The appointment of General Dhiraj Seth comes at a time when the Indian Army is undergoing a massive structural transformation. Beyond the routine change of guard, the military is navigating the complex process of theaterisation and the urgent integration of new-age technology into traditional warfare. Experts like Lt Gen PR Shankar (retired) have pointed out that the challenge for the new Chief will be to balance this technological infusion with the core combat requirements of the force. By placing an officer with a background in the Armoured Corps—the spearhead of ground-based maneuver warfare—at the helm, the establishment appears to be doubling down on the importance of operational mobility and tactical readiness in an era of shifting geopolitical realities.
