The TMC national general secretary faced a marathon grilling by federal agencies over the school recruitment scam, marking yet another high-stakes showdown in West Bengal’s political landscape.

The air at Kolkata’s CGO Complex was unusually quiet this Monday, a stark contrast to the heavy security cordons that usually signal a high-profile visit from the Trinamool Congress (TMC). By 11:00 AM, अभिषेक बनर्जी had already checked in at the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office. He would not emerge for another 11 hours. What followed was a grueling, day-long session focusing on the controversial primary school recruitment scam, a case that has become the pivot point for central agencies’ scrutiny of the state’s political leadership.

By the time Banerjee walked out at 10:15 PM, the political narrative had already hardened. He didn’t mince words, framing the marathon session not as a routine legal proceeding, but as a calculated strike against opposition forces. This interrogation comes on the heels of another exhausting day for the TMC leader; just 24 hours earlier, he had spent roughly eight-and-a-half hours facing questions from the state CID regarding a separate case involving alleged signature fraud on documents related to the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly.

The Web of Investigation

At the heart of the ED’s probe is the financial trail linked to 'Leaps and Bounds Private Limited,' a firm where Banerjee previously served as CEO. While his name appeared in the initial charge sheets filed by both the CBI and the ED, he has notably not been named as a formal accused. The agency’s interest in him stems from the Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) they registered following the initial judicial intervention by former Calcutta High Court Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who first ordered a CBI probe into the recruitment irregularities.

This is not the first time the agency has sought answers from the TMC national general secretary. However, Monday’s session lacked the frantic, high-security theater of previous visits. There were no massive deployments of central paramilitary forces or sweeping traffic diversions, suggesting a shift in how these high-stakes summons are being managed on the ground, even as the legal pressure remains unabated.

Why it matters

The broader context here is the sharpening conflict between state-level power and central investigative reach. For the TMC, these repeated summons are seen as a tool to drain the political bandwidth of its top leadership. For the investigative agencies, it is a matter of tracing the financial architecture behind a scandal that has deeply dented the ruling party’s public image. As the legal net tightens around the 'Leaps and Bounds' connection, the primary school recruitment scam remains a key battleground, with each interrogation session serving as a bellwether for the intensity of the ongoing legal and political tussle in West Bengal.
